<br />
Welcome to S.T.E.M. Now's first Tearing Down Barriers Thursday.<br />
(For an introduction to this series, click <a href="http://stemnow.blogspot.com/2016/04/thursday-series-introduction-tearing.html" target="_blank">here</a>).<br />
<br />
So, ever heard the myth that boys are better coders that girls? Well, this post will prove that falsity completely wrong.<br />
<br />
GitHub reports that women's coding changes are accepted more frequently that their male counterparts. But there's a catch: this only occurred when the names of the programmers were blocked, thus removing gender bias.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/96/30/cd/9630cdf2ea57a7e34d76897887ebb68c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/96/30/cd/9630cdf2ea57a7e34d76897887ebb68c.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
When the names were shown, men's program moderations were put into effect at a higher rate than the female's.<br />
<br />
So why does this matter? Well, for starters, no one can say women are worse coders. Plus, gender stereotypes exist in our modern world (big surprise).<br />
<br />
Resources like the Harvard Implicit Test (mentioned in this series' introduction post) are trying to combat gender biases; yet recent studies show that people recognizing their gender biases is not enough to stop this horrible practice. As humans are social creatures and follow the pact, people must see that others do not hold gender biases for them to change theirs.<br />
<br />
In conclusion reader: it is not okay for one gender's work to be discredited, especially when it does not deserve to be so.<br />
<br />
See you next week for Tearing-down Barriers Thursday number two!<br />

<br />
Texting and Driving: A seemingly incurable problem in modern society; not only limited to texting but now associated with using various forms of social media.<br />
<br />
Welcome to S.T.E.M. Now's Wacky Wednesday Series (for an introduction post click <a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1024844992669127872#editor/target=post;postID=8905872442617990560;onPublishedMenu=posts;onClosedMenu=posts;postNum=3;src=postname" target="_blank">here</a>).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2016/02/19/10/04/mobile-1209058_960_720.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2016/02/19/10/04/mobile-1209058_960_720.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Today we will be discussing the Textalyzer. A brief summary of texting-and-driving efforts thus far: They have been unsuccessful. Fed up, law enforcements are proposing legislation allowing the use of a machine (the Textalyzer) to see if a driver happened to be texting when on the rode.<br />
<br />
What does this mean for you? Texting on the road may start being enforced like drunk driving.<br />
<br />
See you next week for our second Wacky Wednesday!Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16770991112907222071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1024844992669127872.post-34203889196415408172016-04-26T00:00:00.000-07:002016-04-26T00:00:09.888-07:00Feel-Good Broadcast One Hello!<br />
<br />
S.T.E.M. Now is pleased to announce the first Feel-Good Broadcast! (For an introduction about this series, go <a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1024844992669127872#editor/target=post;postID=983062128811405491;onPublishedMenu=posts;onClosedMenu=posts;postNum=3;src=postname" target="_blank">here</a>.)<br />
<br />
On today's post we will be addressing: honeybees; specifically, their capacity to feel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2014/11/10/09/43/honeybee-525224_960_720.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2014/11/10/09/43/honeybee-525224_960_720.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
What do you think of when you see a bee? Most of us may be annoyed or scared, but only a few of us think about the bee itself.<br />
<br />
Science was originally unsure whether insects made conscious decisions, (think: does a fly have the brainpower to make decisions or judgements based on reasoning), but now has decreed that insects may have the brainpower to feel certain emotions; although, it is not probable a honeybee can make moral choices purposely.<br />
<br />
See you next Tuesday for the Feel-Good Broadcast Number Two!<br />

<br />
Today's new series is: Fantastic Females, post celebrating successful women in S.T.E.M!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2014/10/28/10/39/woman-506322_960_720.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2014/10/28/10/39/woman-506322_960_720.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
What is the difference between this and <a href="http://stemnow.blogspot.com/2016/04/thursday-series-introduction-tearing.html" target="_blank">yesterday's series</a>, you may ask? Well, Thursday's series is focused on breaking down S.T.E.M. barriers, and today's is centered promoting females in S.T.E.M. occupations.<br />
<br />
A quick preview of the following weeks:<br />
- a teenager who created a nonprofit encouraging girls to enter computer science, and got into all Ivy-League schools<br />
<br />
Be sure to come back next week to check out Fantastic Friday!<br />

<br />
As this blog's focus is on females in S.T.E.M., I thought it was time to have a series dedicated solely to the gender gap in S.T.E.M., and more specifically; how leaders are combatting the problem.<br />
<br />
According to the National Girls Collaborative Project, women only make up 18.2% on the workforce for computer science, and that is only an example of these discouraging statistics.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, many organizations are working to combat this; for example, take Harvard University.<br />
The <a href="https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html" target="_blank">Implicit Test</a> measures your inner preferences for a variety of topics, two of which are<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2016/03/09/08/23/equality-1245576_960_720.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2016/03/09/08/23/equality-1245576_960_720.png" width="297" /></a></div>
Gender and Career and Gender and Science. I strongly encourage readers to take the Implicit Test if you desire; I found it very insightful.<br />
<br />
A quick sneak peak:<br />
Studies show women's coding changes are accepted more frequently if the name is hidden, and what companies are doing about this.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This may be an opinion statement, but it is one that rings true every week in my experience:</div>
<div>
<i>Tuesdays are the absolute worst. </i></div>
<div>
To be in a Tuesday is to be deep in a tunnel, but too far away to see the light at the end (a.k.a. the weekend). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2012/12/27/12/34/tunnel-72616_960_720.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2012/12/27/12/34/tunnel-72616_960_720.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In an effort to provide a remedy for what I shall now call the Tuesday Effect, S.T.E.M. Now is launching Feel-Good Broadcast every Tuesday. This blog will share stories of valiant, courageous, and/or sweet deeds happening currently in the S.T.E.M. Field.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A sneak peak ahead: A certain man is trying to cure cancer with a novel approach.</div>

<br />
Do you know that one of the major reasons females leave STEM is that they believe the (untrue) "geeky" stereotypes around STEM? Alas, according to Business Insider, when females hear generalizations about computer programmers, or engineers, their interest in STEM fields decreases.<br />
<br />
At STEM Now, we are combating these false assumptions with our new series: Social Spotlight.<br />
Every Sunday this blog will feature one <b>STEM-group making a difference in the world</b>.<br />
<br />
A quick teaser for the Sundays ahead:<br />
<a href="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2014/12/03/17/45/recycle-555651_960_720.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2014/12/03/17/45/recycle-555651_960_720.jpg" width="318" /></a><br />
-one group with a novel approach to teach coding to young girls<br />
-an organization pursuing a simpler way to recycle<br />
<br />
These examples are just a small sample about what we will share with you, so make sure to check out STEM Now next Sunday for our first Social Spotlight!<br />
