Tearing-Down Barriers Thursday One

Hello!

Welcome to S.T.E.M. Now's first Tearing Down Barriers Thursday.
(For an introduction to this series, click here).

So, ever heard the myth that boys are better coders that girls? Well, this post will prove that falsity completely wrong.

GitHub reports that women's coding changes are accepted more frequently that their male counterparts. But there's a catch: this only occurred when the names of the programmers were blocked, thus removing gender bias.

When the names were shown, men's program moderations were put into effect at a higher rate than the female's.

So why does this matter? Well, for starters, no one can say women are worse coders. Plus, gender stereotypes exist in our modern world (big surprise).

Resources like the Harvard Implicit Test (mentioned in this series' introduction post) are trying to combat gender biases; yet recent studies show that people recognizing their gender biases is not enough to stop this horrible practice. As humans are social creatures and follow the pact, people must see that others do not hold gender biases for them to change theirs.

In conclusion reader: it is not okay for one gender's work to be discredited, especially when it does not deserve to be so.

Wacky Wednesday One

Hello!

Texting and Driving: A seemingly incurable problem in modern society; not only limited to texting but now associated with using various forms of social media.

Welcome to S.T.E.M. Now's Wacky Wednesday Series (for an introduction post click here).

Today we will be discussing the Textalyzer. A brief summary of texting-and-driving efforts thus far: They have been unsuccessful. Fed up, law enforcements are proposing legislation allowing the use of a machine (the Textalyzer) to see if a driver happened to be texting when on the rode.

What does this mean for you? Texting on the road may start being enforced like drunk driving.

See you next week for our second Wacky Wednesday!

Feel-Good Broadcast One

Hello!

S.T.E.M. Now is pleased to announce the first Feel-Good Broadcast! (For an introduction about this  series, go here.)

On today's post we will be addressing: honeybees; specifically, their capacity to feel.

What do you think of when you see a bee? Most of us may be annoyed or scared, but only a few of us think about the bee itself.

Science was originally unsure whether insects made conscious decisions, (think: does a fly have the brainpower to make decisions or judgements based on reasoning), but now has decreed that insects may have the brainpower to feel certain emotions; although, it is not probable a honeybee can make moral choices purposely.

See you next Tuesday for the Feel-Good Broadcast Number Two!
